Who can live in Andorra? A pathway for your profile

Any foreign national, French nationals included, can live in Andorra if they obtain a residence authorisation. What you will do there determines which one: a job with an Andorran employer, your own company, clients or an employer abroad, or no activity. Each pathway details the status, its cost, the tax and the pitfalls.

The 7 pathways: employee, entrepreneur, freelancer, YouTuber, investor, retiree, family

Each pathway follows the same outline: who it is for, which status, what it costs, taxation in Andorra and in France, a worked example, what can make the plan fail and an action plan. Choose the one that fits your situation: the rules have been checked at 10 October 2026 against the official Andorran and French texts.

Status, cost and tax: the 7 profiles compared

It is first and foremost your activity in Andorra that determines your residency status: a job, a company, clients or an employer abroad, or no activity. The table summarises what each pathway details.

Frequently asked questions

Can a French national settle in Andorra?

Yes, provided that they obtain a residence authorisation, like any foreign national. French nationals are relatively favoured: authorisations are granted first to nationals of states linked to Andorra by an agreement, including France (Llei 9/2012, art. 40); for salaried employment, they are not required to have any professional experience (regulation of 7 October 2026); and their authorisations for residence without gainful activity are renewed more quickly, for three years and then for ten years after five years. The status then depends on what you will do in Andorra.

Which status is the cheapest way to settle in Andorra?

Employee status: no sum to pay to the AFA, and the €190.96 fee for the initial authorisation is paid by the employer; you still need a job offer and a place in the quota. Next comes the digital nomad: no payment to the AFA provided for by law and a fee of €224.61, but subject to a favourable decision from the Ministry of the Economy. The international professional deposits €47,500, refundable on departure; the self-employed person pays €50,000 on a final basis; passive residency requires €1,000,000 invested and €50,000 paid on a final basis.

Which pathway should I read if my situation combines several profiles?

Start from the activity you will carry on from Andorra: that is what determines the residency status. An entrepreneur moving with their family first reads the entrepreneur’s pathway, then the family’s pathway for dependants. A retiree who wants to keep working does not fall under passive residency, which prohibits any professional activity.

Can you live in Andorra without working there or investing €1,000,000?

The options are limited. Without an activity carried on from Andorra, the standard status is passive residency, which since 13 February 2026 has required an investment of €1,000,000 in Andorra (or €400,000 in the public Housing Fund) and a non-refundable payment of €50,000. The other statuses are based on an activity: a job, an Andorran company, clients or an employer abroad, with the exception of a few special cases such as residence for scientific, cultural or sporting interest.

Can you work remotely from Andorra for a French company?

Yes: that is the purpose of digital nomad status, which covers in particular an employee of an employer established outside Andorra (Llei 9/2012, art. 23.5 bis). It requires a favourable decision from the Ministry of the Economy, sufficient resources, insurance, housing and 90 days of presence a year. Your social security contributions and your tax residency still need to be examined case by case.

Do the pathways take French taxation into account?

Yes. Each pathway sets out the criteria for French tax domicile (Article 4 B of the CGI), the rules of the France–Andorra tax treaty and, where it may apply, the French exit tax. As long as your household, your main activity or the centre of your economic interests remain in France, you remain taxable there.

Are the amounts shown up to date?

They have been checked at 10 October 2026 against the official texts: consolidated Andorran laws, the BOPA, the CASS, Légifrance and impots.gouv.fr. Quotas, the minimum wage and contribution bases change every year; each page shows its verification date and its sources.

Do these pathways replace personalised advice?

No. They set out the general rules and common mistakes, with indicative calculations. For a move that involves your assets, a company or your retirement, have your situation validated by a professional, on both the Andorran and the French side.
