Spouse, children, elderly parents: each family member needs their own authorisation. Depending on your status, they come with you as dependants, with additional sums and resources, or join you through family reunification (reagrupament familiar). Here are the rules, the resources required and the documents to provide at 11 October 2026.

- **€12,000** per dependant, passive residency (non-refundable)
- **€9,500** per dependant, international professional (refundable)
- **+100%** of the annual minimum wage in resources per dependant
- **3 months** of residence before family reunification

## Key points

- For the statuses without work (passive, international professional, scientific, cultural or sporting interest), the family obtains the same status as the holder, as dependants, from the application or later.
- Each dependant adds €12,000 (passive, non-refundable) or €9,500 (international professional, refundable) to the AFA, a fee of €1,000 and the equivalent of one year’s minimum wage to the resources required.
- The holder of a residence and work permit goes through family reunification, open after 3 months of legal residence: sufficient resources, suitable housing and insurance for each person are required.
- A spouse and children joining through reunification who have an employment contract obtain a residence and work permit, outside the quota.
- For French and Spanish nationals, the 2000 convention between France, Spain and Andorra also provides for a right of establishment for the family.

## Dependants or family reunification: two regimes

The immigration law treats the family in two ways, depending on the status of the principal holder.

**Statuses without work — Dependants**

- Passive, international professional, scientific, cultural or sporting interest
- Same status as the holder, from the application or later
- Sum paid to the AFA, fee and additional resources
- Llei 9/2012, art. 91 to 94

**Statuses with work — Family reunification**

- Holder of a residence and work permit, or Andorran national
- After 3 months of legal and effective residence
- Resources, housing and insurance; outside the quota
- Llei 9/2012, art. 102 to 113

The [digital nomad](https://andorrefiscal.fr/en/residency/digital-nomad) and the participant in the programme for entrepreneurs follow the rules for the statuses without work (art. 102). In all cases, each family member receives their own authorisation and must register with the [comú](https://andorrefiscal.fr/en/glossary#comu) of their parish within 3 months.

## Who can be a “dependant” under the statuses without work?

The law lists the persons who may accompany the holder of passive residency, of international professional residency or of residency for scientific, cultural or sporting interest (art. 91):

- the **spouse** who is not separated, only one spouse being admitted, or the **partner** in a stable union;
- the **minor children** of the holder and those of their spouse;
- **adult children under 25** whose main activity is studying;
- dependent adult children with a disability, or placed under a protection regime;
- the **ascendants** of the holder or of their spouse, if they are dependent on the holder;
- other dependent descendants and persons under guardianship.

A “dependant” is a person who depends economically or personally on the holder. They lose that status if they set up their own household or stop living with the holder (Decree 407/2025, art. 10). Dependants are not counted against the quota (art. 23). For stable unions, a rule limits abuse: a new partner can be brought over only 5 years after the registration of the previous union (art. 92).

## What each dependant costs

**Cost of a dependant by the holder’s status**

| Holder’s status | Sum paid to the AFA per person | Refundable? | Initial fee | Additional resources |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Passive residency | €12,000 | No | €1,000 | 100% of the annual minimum wage |
| International professional | €9,500 | Yes | €1,000 | 100% of the annual minimum wage |
| Scientific, cultural or sporting interest | €9,500 | Yes | €1,000 | 100% of the annual minimum wage |

Llei 9/2012, art. 96, 99, 101 and 154; Decree 407/2025, art. 2. For the digital nomad, the law provides for no sum to be paid to the AFA, and the resources required are set by regulation.

- **Couple, passive residencyto the AFA, non-refundable**: €62,000
- **Couple and two children, passiveto the AFA, non-refundable**: €86,000
- **Couple and two children, international professionalto the AFA, refundable**: €76,000

The resources required increase accordingly: with the minimum wage of July 2026, about €56,500 a year for a single person, €75,300 for a couple and €112,900 for a couple with two children (indicative calculation: €1,568.67 × 12 × 3, plus one year’s minimum wage per dependant). The conditions for each status are in [Passive residency](https://andorrefiscal.fr/en/residency/passive-residency) and [International professional](https://andorrefiscal.fr/en/residency/international-professional); the total cost, status by status, in [AFA deposit and the cost of residency](https://andorrefiscal.fr/en/residency/costs-afa-deposit).

Each person must also be insured: 100% of medical costs, incapacity and old age, with illness alone being sufficient for minors and those over 60 (art. 90). Medical fitness is proved by a certificate from the forensic medicine service for children aged 14 or under, and by the examination of the immigration medical service above that age (art. 92).

## Family reunification: who can come, and with what resources?

The holder of a [work permit](https://andorrefiscal.fr/en/residency/work-permit), that is, the residence and work authorisation, may apply for family reunification if they have resided legally, effectively and permanently in Andorra for at least **3 months** (art. 102). The following may be reunited (art. 103):

- the spouse or the partner in a stable union;
- minor children, and those of the spouse of whom the applicant has custody;
- dependent adult children, under guardianship or an equivalent protection measure;
- dependent ascendants aged at least 65 or retired;
- other persons under guardianship, where both parents have lost parental authority.

> “The following may apply for family reunification […]: a person of Andorran nationality who resides in the Principality of Andorra, or a foreign national holding a residence and work immigration authorisation who has resided in Andorra legally, effectively and permanently during the last three months.”
>
> — [Llei 9/2012, qualified law on immigration, Article 102.1 (free translation)](https://www.portaljuridicandorra.ad/L2012009)

The applicant must show sufficient resources to provide everyone with a decent standard of living throughout the period of the authorisation, and housing that meets habitability standards; the spouse and children under 16 live in the applicant’s home (art. 106). According to the e-tràmits information sheet, household income must reach at least 100% of the minimum wage per adult and 70% per minor child. Each family member joining must be covered by health insurance at 100%.

> **Example: Couple with two children**
>
> Minimum household resources: (100% + 100% + 70% + 70%) × €1,568.67 = about **€5,333 a month**.
>
> Indicative calculation based on the monthly minimum wage in force since 1 July 2026 and the thresholds in the e-tràmits information sheet “B.1”.

Reunification is subject neither to the quota nor to a nationality criterion (art. 42), and it cannot be refused on health grounds (art. 112). The fee is €22.61. The authorisation lasts one year, is renewed three times for two years, then for ten years after seven years; it remains tied to that of the applicant (art. 109). Any polygamous reunification is prohibited (art. 104).

> **Good to know: And the self-employed?**
>
> The law opens family reunification to the holder of a “residence and work” authorisation. The self-employed authorisation is legally a residence and work authorisation for self-employment, with no separate rule on this point: have the Immigration Service confirm the conditions applicable to your family.

## The documents for family reunification

The application is submitted in person, by appointment, to the Immigration Service, once 3 months of legal residence in Andorra have passed; the fee is €22.61 and the maximum response time stated is 60 working days. According to the e-tràmits information sheet “B.1”, the application includes in particular:

- the application form, the passport (or a European’s identity card) and a photo less than 6 months old;
- criminal record certificates from the country of origin, the country of nationality and the countries of residence, and a sworn statement;
- the marriage or stable union certificate, less than 3 months old;
- the birth certificate of each minor child, less than 3 months old, and, where applicable, proof of custody;
- proof of housing and insurance covering 100% of the medical costs of each family member joining;
- proof of resources: the last three payslips and the CASS points statement for an employee;
- for a child aged 18 to 25, a certificate of studies; for an ascendant, proof of insufficient resources;
- the medical examination and comú registration forms.

All official foreign documents must be apostilled or legalised. For criminal record certificates and the apostille on the French side, see our guide to the [documents to provide for a residence application](https://andorrefiscal.fr/en/residency/application-process#pieces).

## Can the spouse and children work?

It depends on the status. A spouse and children reunited with an employee who present an employment contract obtain a residence and work permit, outside the quota (art. 42 and 110), and may carry on any salaried activity (art. 38). Other family members, such as parents, must apply for an ordinary [work authorisation](https://andorrefiscal.fr/en/residency/work-permit), on the usual conditions (art. 111). The foreign spouse of an Andorran obtains a ten-year authorisation, for residence and work if they present a contract (art. 107).

In the statuses without work, the dependant shares the holder’s status, and passive residency prohibits any activity. To work in Andorra, the dependant must obtain their own authorisation, with its conditions and its quota (art. 19).

## French and Spanish nationals: what the 2000 convention provides

The convention signed on 4 December 2000 between France, Spain and Andorra provides for a right of establishment for the family of nationals of the three countries (art. 9). The following may settle with the holder of the right of residence:

- their spouse, and their descendants under 21 or dependent on them;
- the ascendants of the holder and of their spouse who are dependent on the holder.

For students and persons settling without an activity, this right presupposes sufficient resources and social security cover. Family members’ permits are of the same nature and duration as the holder’s. These rules apply neither to temporary workers nor to cross-border workers. Andorran law applies in everything the treaties do not provide for (Llei 9/2012, art. 2): have it confirmed how the convention fits with your status.

## After arrival: school, health, tax

Each family member registers with the comú within 3 months. At each [renewal of the authorisations](https://andorrefiscal.fr/en/residency/renewal-permanent-residency) for residence without work, you must prove that the dependants still depend on the holder (Decree 407/2025, art. 20). If the holder dies or leaves the country, the dependants have one year to regularise their situation (art. 19); in the event of death, one of them may keep the authorisation as principal holder if they meet its conditions (Llei 9/2012, art. 93).

## Frequently asked questions

### How much do you need to earn to bring your family to Andorra?

For family reunification, the e-tràmits information sheet requires household income to reach at least 100% of the minimum wage per adult and 70% per minor child: with the minimum wage of July 2026 (€1,568.67 a month), about €5,333 a month for a couple with two children (indicative calculation). For the statuses without work, each dependant adds 100% of the annual minimum wage to the resources required of the holder.

### How long does family reunification take?

The e-tràmits information sheet shows a maximum response time of 60 working days after the application is submitted. But you must first have resided legally in Andorra for at least 3 months, and gather civil status certificates less than 3 months old, apostilled or legalised.

### Can you bring your family with passive residency?

Yes, but not through family reunification: spouse, children and dependent ascendants accompany the holder as dependants, with the same status. Each adds €12,000 paid to the AFA on a final basis, a fee of €1,000 and the equivalent of one year’s minimum wage to the resources required; dependants are not counted against the quota (Llei 9/2012, art. 23 and 96).

[Read: Passive residency › The €50,000 AFA deposit, now non-refundable](https://andorrefiscal.fr/en/residency/passive-residency#versement-afa)

### Can an adult child remain a dependant?

Yes, in certain cases. For the statuses without work: an adult child under 25 whose main activity is studying, or a dependent adult child with a disability. For reunification with an employee, the e-tràmits information sheet covers children aged 18 to 25 who are pursuing their studies without interruption, with supporting evidence.

### Can you bring your parents to Andorra?

For the statuses without work, the ascendants of the holder or of their spouse can be declared as dependants, each adding a sum to the AFA, a fee and additional resources. For an employee, reunification covers dependent ascendants aged at least 65 or retired, who must prove that they do not have sufficient resources of their own.

### Is an unmarried couple treated like a married couple?

Yes, if it is a stable union formed under the law that governs it; the e-tràmits information sheet asks for a certificate from the Andorran civil register. In the statuses without work, a stable union is treated as equivalent to marriage, with a 5-year wait before a new partner can be brought over.

### What happens to dependants if the holder leaves Andorra?

They have one year to regularise their situation, for example by applying for their own authorisation (Decree 407/2025, art. 19). Cancellation of the holder’s authorisation entails that of the dependants or reunited family members (Llei 9/2012, art. 73).

### Do you need insurance for each child?

Yes. In the statuses without work, each minor must be covered at least for illness. In family reunification, the e-tràmits information sheet requires insurance covering 100% of medical costs for each family member joining.

[Read: Healthcare and insurance](https://andorrefiscal.fr/en/living-in-andorra/healthcare)

### Is family reunification subject to the quota?

No. Authorisations granted for family reunification depend neither on a nationality criterion nor on the places available in the quota (art. 42). Likewise, dependants under the statuses without work are not counted against the quota (art. 23).
